iTunes has hit 25 billion song downloads in its virtual store, Apple
announced today. A German customer who bought "Monkey Drums (Goksel
Vancin Remix)" by Chase Buch conducted the landmark purchase, and Apple
is giving him a gift card worth €10,000, or around $13,500. The company
also revealed that the iTunes store averages 15,000 downloaded songs per
minute, totaling $1.7 billion in revenue with its 26 billion song
catalog in the last quarter of 2012. The virtual store launched almost
10 years ago.
Though Apple posted impressive numbers with iTunes, its song downloads are far below their app downloads: the App Store marked
its 40 billionth download last month, with nearly 20 billion downloaded
in 2012 alone, though many apps are also available for free.
